A Global Art & Design Challenge for Sustainable Mining on the Moon
Presented by TOM (orbitaltom.com), in collaboration with the Moon Village Association (MVA), ASME DFW Section (hopefully), and Born Global Community, in celebration of International Moon Day 2025
Lunar Futures invites artists, engineers, students, and creatives around the world to envision what a sustainable lunar mining site might look like by the 2040s. This global art and design challenge blends imagination with engineering insight, with the goal of inspiring conversations around lunar resource utilization, peaceful cooperation, and responsible innovation in space.
· Sustainable lunar mining practices
· Collaboration between human and robotic systems
· Interaction between at least two machines or systems (inspired by ASME's engineering values)
· Harmony with the lunar environment and international cooperation (aligned with MVA’s mission)
The contest is open globally and divided into three age-based categories:
· Student: Ages 12–17
· University: Ages 18–25
· Professional / Open: Age 26+ or any background
Each person or team may submit one entry.
· Submission Deadline: July 15, 2025
· Public Voting Opens: July 16, 2025
· Public Voting Closes: July 24, 2025
· Live Event & Winner Announcement: July 27, 2025 (International Moon Day)
· Visual formats accepted: illustration, digital painting, comic panel, poster, 3D render, etc.
· File type: JPG or PNG, maximum 25MB
· Include a title and a short description (150 words max)
AI-generated art is accepted, under the following conditions:
· Prompts must be submitted with the artwork
· A brief explanation (1–3 sentences) must describe the creative intent and iteration
Top Prizes (across all categories):
· 1st Place: 1:1 3D Printed Apollo Lunar Hammer + curated Moon Book Set
· 2nd & 3rd Place: Curated Moon Book Set (Artemis, The Moon Builders, Space to Grow, Izzy & Dee)
Category Winners (Student, University, Professional/Open):
· Digital Certificate of Excellence signed by judges
Public Favorite:
· Determined by online voting
· Winner announced live during the July 26 event
· Featured on TOM's site and social media
The judging panel will include representatives from:
· TOM (Torres Orbital Mining)
· Moon Village Association
· ASME DFW Section
· Born Global Community
Entries will be scored based on:
· Alignment with theme and sustainability
· Creativity and originality
· Engineering integration (machine/system interaction)
· Artistic impact
· Transparency (for AI-assisted entries)
Judges will review a shortlist of entries and vote independently. Winners will be determined by combined scores.
All shortlisted entries will be posted online between July 15–24. Anyone can vote for their favorite entry through TOM's official platform. Participants are encouraged to share their artwork and voting link using the hashtag #LunarFutures.
· Finalists and selected artworks will be displayed in a virtual gallery on TOM's website
· Artists retain full ownership and copyright
· By submitting, artists grant TOM and partners a non-exclusive license to display their work publicly and in related promotional material
· Artists can request to remove their artwork at any time
